Mannar

Mannar is a town and island district in northern Sri Lanka known for its quiet landscapes, historical depth, and ecological richness. Connected to the mainland by a causeway, it lies facing the Gulf of Mannar. Historically famed for pearl diving, Mannar once played a role in regional trade networks. The town features colonial and ancient relics such as Mannar Fort, the Doric Bungalow, and the “baobab tree” — a rare, large African tree whose presence sparks curiosity. Ecologically, Mannar hosts wetlands, bird sanctuaries (notably Vankalai Lagoon), and the nearby marine features of Adam’s Bridge (Ram Setu). It’s also home to the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, an important Catholic pilgrimage site with centuries of devotion. With its mix of nature, history, and calm ambience, Mannar offers a less-explored slice of Sri Lanka’s diverse heritage.
