Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara, located in Tissamaharama in southern Sri Lanka, is one of the most ancient and revered Buddhist temples in the country. It was originally built by King Kavan Tissa in the 2nd century BCE during the Ruhuna Kingdom era.
The temple is renowned for its massive white stupa (dagoba), which stands majestically against the sky and is said to enshrine sacred relics of the Buddha. Surrounded by serene landscapes and paddy fields, the vihara creates a peaceful atmosphere for worship and reflection.
Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is not only a place of religious devotion but also an important historical and cultural landmark that reflects Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist heritage. It continues to attract thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year, especially during religious festivals and poya days.
