Located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura, Thuparamaya holds the distinction of being the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka and the first to be built after the introduction of Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century BCE. It was constructed by King Devanampiyatissa enshrining the right collarbone relic of Lord Buddha, making it one of the most revered monuments in the Buddhist world.

The stupa’s original structure followed a bell-shaped design, symbolizing simplicity and purity, though it has been restored many times over the centuries. Surrounding the stupa are beautifully preserved stone pillars, believed to have once supported a circular roof — a unique architectural feature that reflects early Sinhalese engineering excellence.

Thuparamaya continues to be a site of deep devotion and pilgrimage, especially during poya days, when thousands of worshippers clad in white visit to meditate, offer flowers, and light oil lamps.

Set amid the tranquil ruins of ancient Anuradhapura, Thuparamaya stands as a timeless symbol of faith and the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Sri Lanka — where spirituality and history unite in serene harmony.
