Sea Turtle Hatcheries, located mainly along Sri Lanka’s southern coast (in towns like Kosgoda, Bentota, and Hikkaduwa), play a vital role in protecting endangered sea turtle species and promoting marine conservation.

These hatcheries collect turtle eggs laid on nearby beaches, rebury them safely in protected sand enclosures, and release the hatchlings into the ocean once they are ready. This process helps increase survival rates, as turtle nests are often threatened by predators, poaching, and coastal development.

Visitors can learn about the five turtle species found in Sri Lanka — the Green Turtle, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, and Leatherback — and even witness or take part in a baby turtle release to the sea. Many centers also rescue and rehabilitate injured or disabled turtles.

Beyond being a tourist attraction, each hatchery serves as a conservation and education center, teaching the importance of preserving marine life and coastal ecosystems. With their blend of wildlife protection, learning, and hands-on experience, Sri Lanka’s turtle hatcheries offer a meaningful and unforgettable eco-tourism experience.
