Located within the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu I stands as a grand reminder of Sri Lanka’s medieval architectural brilliance. Built in the 12th century CE, during the reign of the great King Parakramabahu (1153–1186), the palace once served as the royal residence and administrative center of his flourishing kingdom.

According to ancient chronicles, the palace originally rose to seven stories and contained over 1,000 rooms, richly decorated with intricate carvings, stone columns, and stairways. Although much of it was destroyed — likely by invaders — the ruins that remain still convey a sense of its former grandeur. The surviving massive brick walls, some rising over 10 meters high, and the carefully planned courtyards showcase the advanced engineering and urban planning of the Polonnaruwa era.

The palace is part of the Royal Citadel complex, which also includes the Audience Hall (Council Chamber), the Kumara Pokuna (Royal Bathing Pool), and several administrative buildings — all set amid lush greenery and ancient stone pathways.

Today, the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the power, artistry, and sophistication of Sri Lanka’s ancient kings — a site where royal legacy meets timeless architecture.
