Located just 5 kilometers west of Kandy, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya is Sri Lanka’s largest and most celebrated botanical garden, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and exceptional plant diversity. Originally established as a royal pleasure garden in the 14th century, it was transformed into a botanical garden under British rule in 1821.

Spread across 147 acres along the banks of the Mahaweli River, the gardens feature more than 4,000 species of plants, including rare orchids, towering palms, giant bamboos, medicinal herbs, and an impressive collection of tropical flora from around the world. The Avenue of Royal Palms, the Cannonball Tree, and the Orchid House are among its most iconic highlights.

The gardens also hold historical significance — many royal and colonial figures once strolled through these paths, and during World War II, the gardens briefly served as the headquarters of the Allied Command for the Southeast Asian region.

Today, the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya remain a serene haven for nature lovers, scientists, and travelers alike — a perfect blend of botanical beauty, heritage, and tranquility in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country.
