Located in the vibrant city of Jaffna, the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most revered Hindu temples in Sri Lanka and a shining symbol of Tamil culture, devotion, and tradition. Dedicated to Lord Murugan (also known as Skanda or Kataragama), the temple stands as a magnificent testament to Dravidian architecture and centuries of faith.

Originally built in 948 CE by King Buwaneka Bahu, the temple was later rebuilt in 1734 by Don Juan Mappana Mudaliyar after being destroyed during the colonial era. Today, it features golden gopurams (towers), intricate carvings, and a vast courtyard filled with rhythmic chants, the scent of incense, and the vibrant energy of daily worship.

The temple comes alive during the grand Nallur Festival, held annually in August, spanning 25 days of processions, music, and traditional rituals that attract thousands of devotees from around the world. Barefoot pilgrims dressed in white gather to offer prayers, seek blessings, and celebrate divine love and endurance.

More than a place of worship, Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is a living cultural landmark — a space where spirituality, art, and community come together, radiating the timeless spirit of Jaffna’s heritage.
