Located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, near Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, Minneriya National Park is one of the island’s top wildlife sanctuaries, celebrated for its spectacular elephant gatherings and rich biodiversity. Covering nearly 8,900 hectares, the park centers around the ancient Minneriya Tank, a vast reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE.
During the dry season (June to September), the receding waters of the tank attract hundreds of wild Asian elephants, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle known as “The Gathering” — one of the largest elephant congregations in the world. Beyond elephants, the park is home to deer, monkeys, crocodiles, leopards, and over 160 species of birds.
Set within Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Minneriya combines wildlife adventure with easy access to nearby heritage sites. With its serene landscapes, ancient history, and unforgettable safaris, Minneriya National Park offers an experience where nature and history thrive side by side.
