Matara Fort, located in the southern city of Matara, Sri Lanka, is a historic Dutch-built fortress that dates back to the 17th century. It was originally constructed by the Portuguese and later expanded and strengthened by the Dutch in 1640 after they captured the area.

The fort was built on a narrow strip of land between the Nilwala River and the Indian Ocean, making it strategically important for defense and trade. Surrounded by thick rampart walls, the fort once housed administrative buildings, churches, and residences of colonial officials.

Inside the fort, visitors can still see remnants of Dutch and British colonial architecture, including the Old Dutch Reformed Church, which stands as one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka. The main gate and clock tower remain well-preserved, adding to the site’s historical charm.

Today, Matara Fort serves as a cultural and heritage landmark, offering scenic ocean views and a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. It stands as a quiet yet fascinating reminder of Sri Lanka’s maritime and architectural history.
