Kataragama Sacred City, located in southern Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s most revered multi-religious pilgrimage sites. It is sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and indigenous Vedda communities, symbolizing religious harmony and spiritual unity.

At the heart of the city lies the Kataragama Devalaya (Shrine of Lord Skanda or Murugan), dedicated to the Hindu war god and guardian deity of Sri Lanka. Buddhists revere the adjacent Kiri Vehera Stupa, believed to have been built by King Mahasena in the 6th century BCE to enshrine relics of the Buddha.

Every year, thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad gather here, especially during the Kataragama Esala Festival, a vibrant celebration featuring traditional fire-walking, kavadi dances, and processions.

Surrounded by lush forest and the Menik Ganga River, the city offers a tranquil yet deeply spiritual atmosphere, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most significant cultural and religious destinations.
