The Galle Lighthouse, located inside the Galle Fort on Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, is the oldest functioning lighthouse in the country and one of its most picturesque landmarks. Originally built by the British in 1848 and reconstructed in 1939 after a fire, the lighthouse stands at 26.5 meters (87 feet) on the Point Utrecht Bastion, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
The gleaming white tower contrasts beautifully with the fort’s stone ramparts and turquoise waters, making it a favorite spot for photography and sunset views. Although visitors cannot climb to the top, the surrounding area offers stunning panoramic views of the sea and historic fort walls.
Still operational today, the lighthouse continues to guide ships safely to the Galle Harbor while symbolizing the city’s colonial maritime heritage. Its scenic charm and historical significance make it a must-visit attraction within the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort.
