Rising majestically 200 meters above the central plains, Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Built in the 5th century CE by King Kashyapa I, this ancient rock fortress served as a royal citadel and stands as a masterpiece of urban planning, architecture, and art.

Halfway up the rock once stood a colossal lion gateway, of which only the massive paws remain today — giving the site its name. The climb to the summit passes through beautiful frescoes of celestial maidens, the polished Mirror Wall, and sophisticated water and boulder gardens that reveal advanced hydraulic engineering far ahead of its time.

At the summit lie the ruins of the king’s palace, offering panoramic views of the surrounding forests, lakes, and distant hills. Sigiriya is not only an architectural wonder but also a timeless symbol of Sri Lanka’s ancient ingenuity, artistry, and cultural identity.
