Located in the Sacred Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa) of Polonnaruwa, the Vatadage is one of Sri Lanka’s most exquisite examples of ancient Buddhist architecture. Built during the reign of King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century CE, and later enhanced by King Nissanka Malla, this circular relic house was designed to protect a sacred relic of the Buddha, possibly the Tooth Relic or a Buddhist stupa.

The Vatadage features two concentric terraces, each surrounded by elaborately carved stone railings and moonstones (Sandakada Pahana). The upper platform holds four seated Buddha statues, each facing the cardinal directions, symbolizing universal enlightenment. Intricate carvings of lotus designs, dwarfs, lions, and floral motifs adorn its stairways and balustrades — hallmarks of the artistic excellence of the Polonnaruwa era.

Despite centuries of wear, the symmetry, grace, and craftsmanship of the Vatadage remain breathtaking. The temple stands as a testament to the spiritual devotion and architectural ingenuity of Sri Lanka’s ancient builders.

Today, the Vatadage of Polonnaruwa continues to captivate visitors as one of the most iconic and beautifully preserved monuments of Sri Lanka’s medieval heritage — a perfect harmony of religion, art, and stone.
